The Struggles of Living Abroad as a Ghanaian Man: A Personal Account of Challenges with Family and Relationships

Kwabena Yeboah, who has lived in the U.S. for over 15 years, shares the emotional challenges he has faced while living abroad, particularly with his relationships and experiences as a father. He recounts his life across four different states and his involvement with a Ghanaian woman who led him down a difficult path.

Having loved and supported the woman, he felt betrayed when she kicked him out of their home after their child was born. He shares that when he tried to be involved in his child’s life, he was met with resistance, and his attempts to maintain a relationship with the child became increasingly strained. Despite his efforts to stay connected through video calls, the emotional toll of being apart from his child weighed heavily on him.

Kwabena highlights the challenges men face in relationships with single mothers, particularly when they’re abroad. He speaks about the way some women use their children as leverage in legal battles, and how, despite paying child support, he feels he is treated unfairly. His story also includes an allegation of a fabricated rape case, which resulted in a legal battle that could have sent him to prison. He was offered a deal to plead guilty and face a shorter sentence, but he chose to return to Ghana instead.

He warns other men about the challenges of being involved with single mothers abroad, emphasizing that children brought into such relationships often add strain and can create conflict. He believes that men should be cautious when engaging with women who already have children from previous relationships, especially when living in foreign countries where they may face legal and social challenges.

Kwabena also reflects on his life back in Ghana, where he now feels more hopeful about his future. He has investments in land and property, and he plans to start a business. He’s determined to move forward, leaving behind the emotional pain of his past relationships in the U.S. He hopes that by returning to Ghana, he can create a better life for himself and possibly reconnect with his child in the future.

Kwabena’s story serves as a cautionary tale for other men living abroad, especially those in relationships with women who may use their children as pawns in disputes. He stresses that honesty and transparency in relationships are key to avoiding unnecessary complications.
