Erico, a Ghanaian now living in Canada, says life abroad hasn’t turned out as he imagined. Back in Ghana, he worked as an estate agent, making GHC 30,000 to GHC 40,000 within three months. Now in Canada, he earns between 10,000 and 15,000 Ghc a month working through an agency, but the cost of living is high, and he feels financially stuck.

“Before I left Ghana, I was doing well. I had no rent to pay and my money stayed with me. Now, I can’t even support my family the way I used to. My mother even said ever since I left, they barely receive anything from me,” Erico explained.

After previously appearing in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s daily hustle worldwide show, he indicated that many people reached out to him—some suggesting he should go back to Ghana, others advising him to redo his resume to find better job opportunities. Still, the feedback made him reflect deeply.

“I’m not afraid to go back to Ghana. I know what I was worth there. Some people come here after university, can’t find work back home, and are happy earning 1,000 CAD. But I was doing better in Ghana. If I save 15,000 GHC there, it goes far. Here, I make the same or even less, and it’s gone in a flash due to bills.”

Despite being in Canada, Erico says he’s made up his mind to return to Ghana.

“I’m not saying Canada is bad. It’s a good country, but when I compare both lives, Ghana still makes more sense for me. I used to run ads, and people knew my work. If I return, I’ll just start advertising again—no capital needed—and I’ll bounce back.”

He spent over GHC 18,000 just to secure his visa, and though he’s grateful, he believes that success doesn’t depend on location.

“God can bless you anywhere. The mental stress here is too much. Some people are suffering silently—they can’t even return home because of fear of judgment. But I’m not afraid. I’ll go back and rebuild.”

Erico urges others to think carefully before leaving Ghana. “Abrokyire isn’t heaven. Some people here sleep in shelters or halls because they can’t find jobs. The Canada we used to hear about has changed. If you’re doing well in Ghana, stay and build.”
