From Football Dreams to Mango Farming: Maxwell Kofi Lee’s Inspiring Journey

Maxwell Kofi Lee, a mango farmer based in Somanya in Ghana’s Eastern Region, shared his story on SVTV Africa’s Business Link show with DJ Nyaami. Born into farming, Maxwell described it as a family legacy. His family has long cultivated mangoes, and he initially worked with a German missionary in the mango business. However, Maxwell’s father encouraged him to focus on football rather than farming, believing that farming was seen by society as a form of punishment.

Despite this, after the death of his father in 2012, Maxwell struggled to maintain the farm and decided to travel abroad. He raised money through farming and paid an agent to help him move to Dubai. However, his experience there was disappointing — promises of job opportunities turned out to be false. He worked briefly under harsh conditions but soon returned to Ghana, determined to invest in his mango farm.

Maxwell focused on building his farm and promoting it through social media. His big break came when a journalist featured his story, leading to greater exposure on TV and attracting business deals. He explained that he inherited 10 acres of land from his late father and expanded it by acquiring 15 more acres. Today, he manages around 100 acres, with irrigation systems like boreholes to ensure year-round farming.

He emphasized the importance of persistence, professionalism, and adding value to farming. Maxwell encouraged the youth to see agriculture not as a punishment, but as a profitable and rewarding venture. He also advised young farmers to be cautious with their investments and avoid being cheated.

Maxwell’s dream is to continue expanding his mango farm and eventually support others through donations and mentorship. Reflecting on his journey from football injuries and failed migration plans to building a thriving farm, he shared:
“If you are young and have land somewhere, don’t waste it. Research, invest wisely, and take farming seriously. Agriculture is worth it.”

Today, he runs his own company, MKL Wealth Farms, and remains committed to inspiring the next generation of agribusiness entrepreneurs.
