Richard: Health Worker Turned Entrepreneur Making Strides in the Pastry Business

Richard, a health worker based in Ghana, is also a business owner and a returning guest on SVTV Africa’s Business Link with DJ Nyaami. He shared his journey of starting a pastry business in the Volta Region. Initially, they started small, producing 50 kg of flour for pastries, and now they are working towards increasing production to 5 bags a day. What began with just a single cup of flour has grown significantly, and Richard and his wife, who works as a teacher, manage the business together. They also employ two female workers and own the machines that power their operations.

Their vision is to expand their business to supply pastries across all of Ghana. Richard emphasizes that relying on just one source of income can leave you struggling, especially if you’re a civil servant or nurse. Their product offerings include chips, achomo polloo, coconut biscuits, chocolate pinwheels, bread, fish pies, and rock buns. They cater to various events, including church gatherings, funerals, naming ceremonies, and weddings. They also allow customers to come, sleep over, and make profits from the products.

Richard talks about the importance of deliveries in their business, often needing partners to help distribute their products. He is motivated by the response from people who come to buy from them, which has led to the growth of their business. He shares advice for aspiring entrepreneurs: “Start small, study the market, and don’t waste money. Invest wisely to expand the business.” Richard and his team began with just 30 GHC for flour and oil, and through hard work and dedication, the business has flourished. To date, they’ve invested approximately 30,000 GHC into the business, with 20,000 GHC spent on shipping and the rest on production.

Richard attributes the business’s success to qualities like character, knowledge, determination, and a positive mindset. He also credits his wife for her role in their success. She had a key moment when she went to buy flour on credit from a supplier who trusted them, showing the importance of honesty in business. The company, Richmat Aseda Ventures, which produces Richmat Pastries, is fully registered in Ghana.

Looking ahead, Richard hopes to expand their operations and teach others the knowledge they’ve gained in the pastry business. He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and build their businesses with time and effort. Their social media handles include TikTok and Patrias Village, where they continue to share their journey and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
