Eyewitness Account of Kumasi Market Fire Outbreak

A massive fire broke out in the Kumasi market early this morning, causing extensive damage to buildings and goods. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started at Kwasi Agyemang Abrosona around 4:30 AM after an explosion ignited flames, which quickly spread to a four-story building.

The Ghana National Fire Service arrived promptly, but the fire was intense, making it difficult to control. The flames spread rapidly, consuming the top floors of Kwasi Agyemang Abrosona, nearby makeshift shops, and stalls selling watches and other items. By 9:20 AM, the fire had engulfed several structures, including parts of Hello FM’s building and shops near the Glo Light area.

The fire spread to nearby structures, including a pedestrian bridge and stalls close to Otumfuo Roundabout, near PZ. Many traders desperately tried to salvage their goods, but the intense heat and flames made it nearly impossible. The affected businesses included sellers of shoes, wigs, clothing, foodstuffs (such as rice and oil), and mobile phones.

Tragically, gas cylinders used by restaurants and food vendors in the area exploded, worsening the fire. Although firefighters brought additional tenders, they struggled to contain the blaze, particularly in areas where access was difficult.

Some eyewitnesses believe the fire was caused by a gas explosion or an electrical fault due to intermittent power outages (dumsor). However, officials have yet to confirm the exact cause. Investigations will commence once the fire is completely extinguished.

Authorities, including personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service, Military, National Security, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, visited the scene to assess the damage. Reports indicate that over 2,000 traders have lost their goods, with some businesses completely destroyed.

Many traders suffered devastating losses. One woman, whose husband is abroad, lost her entire phone shop, along with all the phones inside. Shoe vendors also had their stock completely burned.

Despite the scale of destruction, emergency services are working to fully extinguish the fire and secure the area. Further investigations will determine the exact cause of the outbreak and possible preventive measures for the future.
