Tish, the CEO of Pins & Scissors, believes Ghana has many untapped business opportunities that people overlook. According to her, while many Ghanaians prefer office jobs, Nigerians who come to Ghana take advantage of these opportunities and make money.

Tish made the revelation on SVTV Africa’s Business link with Dj Nyaami, she has spent most of her life in the media industry but developed an interest in fashion. Her journey into alterations began when she needed a simple adjustment to her clothes and struggled to find a reliable tailor. This experience opened her eyes to the gap in the market, leading her to establish an alterations business.

Initially, she ran a media consulting firm in Sakaman, where she provided services such as article writing, voice-overs, and media training. She later divided her business into two—continuing media consulting while also focusing on fashion through alterations.

To build her team, she advertised on the radio and interviewed about 30-40 people. Surprisingly, despite many fashion graduates struggling to find jobs, only two were willing to work in alterations. Undeterred, she started the business with a few committed employees.

Over the past three years, Pins & Scissors has gained a strong reputation, amassing over 8,700 social media followers. The business has attracted diverse clients, from everyday individuals to high-profile customers who stop by with their cars just for alterations.

Many people assume that someone from a media background would open a boutique or a wine shop, but Tish saw a different opportunity. Her shop became a go-to place for people who bought outfits in Osu but needed them altered. One satisfied client was so impressed with the service that she even gave them extra money.

Tish emphasizes that determination and focus are crucial in business. At times, her own workers were discouraging, with some tailors refusing to take on alterations because they preferred sewing from scratch. However, she remained steadfast, knowing that almost everyone has a piece of clothing at home that needs adjustments.

Pins & Scissors is more than just an alteration shop; it is a well-structured fashion business. Customers receive receipts and invoices through a computerized system, ensuring professionalism. The company also offers specialized services such as resizing wedding dresses after events.

Starting the business was not easy. Tish had to borrow money from family and friends to buy essential machines. In 2022, an industrial sewing machine cost GHC 2,700, while a hand-sewing machine was around GHC 1,000. She was determined to succeed, even approaching multiple banks for funding. Eventually, with some financial support, she managed to establish her business and now owns four machines.

Although her background is in media, Tish is open to taking on part-time media projects while growing her business. She encourages people to explore different business ideas, such as selling ice blocks at events or opening a salon service dedicated to removing hair extensions.

Pins & Scissors is located in Sakaman, and Tish welcomes anyone looking for professional alteration services.
