Peter Aboagye, a Ghanaian bus driver in the UK, recently shared his journey on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwideshow with DJ Nyaami.

Discussing deportations, he emphasized the importance of having the right documents (nkrataa) before traveling. He believes that access to information is key, as it helps individuals make informed decisions. He noted that while some people risk traveling without proper documentation, he was already financially stable before moving abroad.

Peter, who now resides in Norwich, moved to the UK two and a half years ago. He highlighted how searching for the right information can speed up opportunities, such as becoming a bus driver. Many Ghanaians assume that it takes years to get a driving job in the UK, but he proved otherwise through determination and proper planning.

Peter grew up in Ghana, specifically in New Edubiase. After his father passed away, he moved to Accra to start life on his own. He was involved in borehole drilling and construction work, hiring equipment from Indians to complete projects. Later, he ventured into taxi driving, which helped him save money and eventually start his own company.

His travels took him to various African countries, including South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe, where he met his wife, who was born in the UK but has Zimbabwean roots. They met on a flight to Rwanda, became friends, and later got married in 2017. Although she visited Ghana several times, she was hesitant to relocate permanently. When she became pregnant, she encouraged Peter to move to the UK, emphasizing that if he stayed longer in Ghana, he might miss out on raising their child.

Initially, Peter did cleaning jobs despite owning multiple Kia trucks back in Ghana. However, he quickly realized that staying in the UK required long-term planning. Within two weeks, he decided to get a UK driving license. His wife supported him through the process, and after failing his first test, he studied hard and passed. He eventually secured a job with a bus company, proving that hard work and persistence pay off.

Today, Peter earns £36,000 per year as a bus driver, with opportunities for overtime. He appreciates the structured work environment, training, and flexibility the job offers. Despite earning less than he did in Ghana, he values the stability and quality of life in the UK. He and his wife now own a home, and he believes life abroad is about more than just money—it’s about balance.

Peter still has business interests in Ghana, which his younger brother now manages. He plans to return one day to invest in more businesses. He advises Ghanaians to travel the right way—with proper documentation—rather than becoming illegal immigrants, as this can limit opportunities. He also warns against looking down on Ghana while living abroad, emphasizing that with the right mindset, one can succeed in both Ghana and the UK.

His final words of advice:

“If you have the right documents and a plan, you can make it anywhere. But always respect where you come from.”
