Rita, a Ghanaian based in the US disclosed that she realised she had feelings for women at a young age but dated men to ‘cure’ herself of how she felt.

In a Daily Hustle Worldwide with DJ Nyaami, Rita mentioned that she was born to a Pastor-father and grew up in church but she could not relate to the teachings of ‘man and wife.’ According to Rita, she thought something was wrong with her and needed to cure herself of it.

“I’ve felt like this my entire life. I realised as 8 years old that I couldn’t relate to my friends talking and crushing on boys. I started something was wrong with me and went through the fasting and prayers. I dated men. I believed in the propaganda that you will be cured if you sleep with them.

All I wanted was to be ‘cured.’ I tried anything I could to rectify myself. I hated myself because I was trying to be someone I was not. I wanted to fix myself for the society. I never enjoyed it either,” she shared.

Speaking on her family’s knowledge of her sexual orientation, Rita indicated that they are aware and still love her. However, her pastor-father has still not spoken to her about it.

Moreover, Rita added that she believes she does not need religion to be a good person. She said, “I believe there is God but I’m not a Christian. I don’t need to serve God.”

Rita is married to Madiba, who is also Ghanaian.
