“I once tried a connection in Ghana in 1996 but he duped me. I caught him in Juaben and seized his car. I sold it and left for Ivory Coast with almost $6000. Within three months, I had spent over $4000 on different agents. I only had $1220 left and used it to stow away on a ship.

When we got to Las Palmas, the authorities came to inspect the ship and the man pushed under his bed. I was there for 24 hours. I almost died. I urinated on myself. The bed was too small. At that point, I wanted to return to Ghana,” he recounted.

Mr Obiri Yeboah got off the ship in France, where he stayed for two years before moving to Italy in 1998. According to him, there were fewer jobs in France, which made him relocate.

He stayed in Italy for about 13 years before finally moving to the USA. Speaking on his decision to move, Mr Obiri Yeboah mentioned that Italy treated African immigrants unfairly and feared his kids could not have a better future there.
