A Ghanaian Health Specialist based in Spain stated that her father gave her the silent treatment for three months after she decided to study in Spain instead of working, as most immigrants do.

In an SVTV Africa interview with DJ Nyaami, Maud revealed that she joined her father in Spain at age 16 and was encouraged by the Ghanaian community to work. However, she had a different purpose. Maud and her sister had planned to further their education, but the news received many disapprovals from the Ghanaian community in Spain.

“The Ghanaians told us we were wasting our time to study because no Africans were working in offices in Spain. The pressure from the community got to him, and he told us to quit, but I refused. He gave us the silent treatment for three months and got angry whenever he saw me learning.

I spoke to a teacher who told me about the scholarships I could apply for. It was us against the whole building, and there was no Black person to prove to them that we could do it too,” she recounted.

Maud left her father’s house two years later and studied Medicine on a scholarship. She mentioned some difficulties after graduating from the Medical School and eventually specialised in Family Health.
