Ghanaian young lady, Regina has recounted a horrifying experience crossing the Aegean Sea to Greece where she was arrested and jailed for months before returning to Ghana.

In an interview on SVTV Africa, Regina mentioned that she worked in Turkey illegally but had to flee to avoid Turkish immigration. As a result, she set off to a village in Turkey where many Africans cross the Aegean Sea to Greece.

Regina indicated that they were robbed by Greek sailors and left to die in the middle of the sea.

“I had no problems getting onto the inflatable boat, but everything went bad after five hours on the sea. The boat’s engine stopped, but after one hour, we saw a boat and signalled them to help. We thought it was rescuers from Greece, but they were robbers.

They searched and took everything we had on us, called another boat and put all 51 of us into that boat. The second sailors also gave us two inflatable boats without an engine and left us to die. It was a life-and-death situation. After two hours, we spotted a Turkish boat, and they came to our rescue.”

Regina stated that the penalty for illegally crossing the Turkey border is one year of imprisonment. However, after a few months, Regina willingly signed the deportation form and returned to Ghana.

Regina worked in Saudi Arabia before moving to Turkey. Despite the risks and struggles she encountered in Turkey, Regina seems unperturbed as she wishes to travel again if the opportunity comes.
