Ike Mensah, a Ghanaian US Navy Marine Engineer, shared the highlights of his job, the financial benefits and disadvantages of living at sea for months.
Mr Mensah studied Marine Engineering in the US with a plan to return to Ghana to work. In a chat with DJ Nyaami on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Ike indicated that after 15 years abroad, he currently lives in Ghana but still works with the US Navy.
According to Ike Mensah, despite the financial benefits in the marine field, he said, “it is not for the faint-hearted. Having to live at sea for months won’t be easy for everyone. You don’t always get phone service, and that might be tough for married people.
The positive aspect is that you get all the time you need and the money is good. You don’t buy food or water, so you’re able to save a lot.”
Speaking about his decision to settle in Ghana, Ike Mensah mentioned that he wanted to save cost on rent and bills in the US because he spent most of his time far away from land.
“I spend most of my time at sea, but I still had to pay my bills. It gets tough sometimes. I get homesick, but it’s easier if you know what you want. I moved to Ghana in 2020. When I have to return to work, I fly to the ship’s location. Before my leave, I returned to Ghana from Greece, but I joined the ship in Djibouti.
I work in the deep sea, so we work around the world. That’s why I can stay anywhere and work, but I want to resign and settle in Ghana. The culture abroad is not for everybody, and I don’t want to live in a foreign country again.”
