Akwasi Asare, a Ghanaian based in Canada, left his teaching career in Ghana due to concerns about the prospects for teachers.

In a chat on SVTV AFRICA, Akwasi indicated that he would not have travelled abroad for greener pastures if he earned GHS10,000 or more as monthly pay.

He said, “Living in Ghana is not as bad as people say. I would have stayed in Ghana if I earned GHS10,000 to GHS12,000 monthly. I was paid GHS2800 before I left Ghana.”

Akwasi Asare stated that Ghana’s government frequently neglects teachers, posing a significant challenge to the education system. He added that it is difficult to survive in Ghana on a teacher’s salary.

“I was not married, but I had a family to support and bills to settle. I couldn’t cater to their needs as much as I wanted, so I decided to travel.”

Mr Asare shared the differences between working in Canada and Ghana. He revealed that his first pay felt unreal because “(it felt) like I had wasted time and energy teaching in Ghana. I got sad when I received my first pay. My monthly pay in Ghana is just two days’ pay in Canada.”
