Owusu-Afriyie travelled to the UK on a study visa two weeks ago (time of interview) and revealed that she has no plans of returning to Ghana to practice what she learned.

In an SVTV AFRICA interview with DJ Nyaami, Owusu-Afryie indicated that she may consider returning to Ghana upon completion if she is offered GHS6000 a week (GHS24,000 monthly).

According to Afriyie, the government did not sponsor her education to study abroad. So, she is obligated to return after graduating.

In response to DJ Nyaami’s question, she said, “No. I didn’t come with a government scholarship. I will only come if the salary is good enough because I can’t return after my degree for a GHS3500 salary. I will accept GHS6000 a week. I know it’s not possible, so I’d rather stay in the UK.”

Owusu-Afriyie worked as a health assistant in Ghana before leaving for the UK. She disclosed her salary and some challenges that are pushing many nurses to the US and the UK.

“Imagine taking GHS1700 as a salary in our economy right now. Nurses in Ghana face many challenges in Ghana. We didn’t even have an ambulance at the hospital where I worked. It is better to sell your property and leave than stay in Ghana because you know you can make more here,” she added.
