Belgium-based Ghanaian Kwadjo Amankwah recounted his journey and early years in Europe in a chat on SVTV AFRICA.

Speaking with DJ Nyaami on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mr Amankwah revealed that he had to eat from trash cans in Europe after paying thousands of euros for a ‘connection.’ Kwadjo had a tough childhood. He lived with his father and stepmom until he turned 14 years old when he started illegal mining to support himself.

“When I decided to travel, my father refused to help me. My father said my wife and kids would reap the benefits if he helped me travel abroad because he would not be dead by then.

Even though I helped him establish himself through work, he turned his back on me later.  My mom and her husband supported me with money. I sold my shop and the goods to sponsor the trip to Europe,” he recounted.

Kwadjo Amankwah paid 5,000 euros for a visa, but the agent did not disclose his destination. Kwadjo arrived in Istanbul, Turkey and had to continue the journey to Europe by road.

“The agent took us (59 Ghanaians) to a camp. Some had been there for years. They said it was a life-or-death situation, but I managed to cross to Greece. We had no place to sleep. Many Ghanaians returned to Ghana. We had no money for food. My brother and I hunted for food from trash cans. My family had to send me money from Ghana to pay for rent in Greece,” Kwadjo added.

Mr Amankwaah stayed in Greece for nine months doing odd jobs. He shared more on how he moved from Greece to Belgium risking prison time.
