Spain-based Ghanaian Ben Arkorful revealed that he was rich with several cars while in Ghana, but he believed travelling abroad would guarantee success, but he regretted his decision later.

Ben worked in the fuel industry before he travelled abroad. In an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Mr Arkorful revealed that he made thousands of dollars and owned many cars in the late 90s. However, the business was illegal.

“I owned the small fuel stations (gawo gawo), and we got the supply from fuel tankers instead of the Tema Oil refinery. They make a wrong turn and siphon the fuel for us to sell.

After realising it was illegal, I decided to focus on travelling abroad. I owned cars, but I was eager to travel. I had over $32,000 in cash in the 90s. I kept my money under my bed. I didn’t have a bank account,” he disclosed.

Ben mentioned that he planned to travel to Europe to buy some tanker heads to set up a proper fuel station.

“I paid €6000 (¢8500 then) in 1998 to Europe, but it was Dubai. What I expected was not what I experienced in Dubai. I couldn’t return to Ghana because I left my wife and brother in charge of the business, but it collapsed. A rich man in Ghana became a poor man in Dubai.”

He migrated to Spain, where he has been for over a decade.
