UK-based Ghanaian nurse Jeffrey Kwabena has stated that he would not have travelled if he made GHS7,000 monthly in Ghana.

In an interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Jeffrey asserted that many Ghanaian nurses leave the country because of the poor health systems and salary structure.

Jeffery Kwabena revealed that he married his long-time nurse girlfriend immediately after his visa was approved because it allows spouses to join.

In response to whether he would have left Ghana if his job paid a salary range of GHS7,000 to GHS10,000, Jeffery said, “I would not have travelled if I made GHS7000 in Ghana. It came with a prize. We’ve sold our freedom and happiness for money.”

“It’s an open prison. My wife and I work night shifts. At least I have my wife to chat with, but the single ones can go a week without talking to anyone. Ghana is better in terms of socialisation and mental health. The only difference is the money,” he added.

BBC reported that over 1,200 Ghanaian nurses joined the UK’s nursing register in 2022. Moreover, the head of nursing at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Gifty Aryee, told the BBC that most of the hospital’s experienced nurses left the country.

Despite the current situation, Ghana Business News, in November 2022, reported that over 10,000 unemployed nurses “picketed the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to demand postings from the government.”
