Nana Ofori, a Ghanaian based in Germany, is advising young people to think carefully before traveling abroad.
According to him, traveling is not a bad idea—but it must come with a plan to return home and build Ghana. He stresses that many people see life abroad as heaven, but the reality is very different.
He explains that learning a skill before traveling is crucial. Without a skill, survival abroad can be extremely difficult. He shared that a friend regrets moving to Germany without any vocational training. Skills like hairdressing, carpentry, tailoring, or any hands-on profession can make a huge difference.
Nana Ofori also revealed that he refused to live abroad illegally or constantly run from immigration authorities. He believes high expectations about life overseas often lead to frustration and depression. Recalling his own experience, he said there were moments he even cried on a train because adapting was not easy. Abroad is highly structured, he noted, while Ghana still needs stronger systems and better organization.
He advised that if your visa application is denied, accept it and move on instead of risking illegal travel.
Comparing systems, he pointed out that abroad, workers are certain of their salaries and wages are regulated. He believes Ghana must improve its minimum wage and strengthen transparency, especially in government job recruitment, which he says should be fully digital and transparent.
He also cautioned young people to stop chasing countries like Dubai without a clear plan. Social media often paints a glamorous picture, but the reality can be harsh.
Despite opportunities in countries like United States, Nana Ofori says Ghana remains home. He urges Ghanaians to be proud of their identity and make wise decisions.
