Kwaku Owusu, a Ghanaian based in the United Kingdom, has shared his honest journey about life abroad in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show.
Originally from Ahafo, Kwaku moved to Accra to pursue photography. He opened a shop, bought machines, and worked hard, but the income was hand-to-mouth. “It wasn’t money you could build a future with,” he explained. That reality pushed him to look for a way out.
With little savings, Kwaku decided to try his luck abroad. Although he had no family in the UK, he had a few relatives in France, Germany, and other European countries. Like many others, he noticed that people who travelled abroad returned home to build houses and live comfortably, and he wanted to understand how they did it.
“When I arrived in the UK, I struggled a lot,” he recalled. “To be a man is not easy.” He revealed that the agent who facilitated his journey promised him a job and claimed he would earn £2,500 a month, but the reality was very different. “That was a lie,” he said, urging agents to tell people the truth about life abroad.
Despite the struggles, Kwaku says he will never discourage anyone from travelling abroad, even though some people give up. He recalled a woman who recently bought her ticket back to Ghana after failing to cope with the pressure.
“Abroad is like sikaduro,” Kwaku said. “You get the money, but you’re not always happy.” He noted that while life overseas can be lonely and stressful, the financial rewards are real. “The money I’ve made here, I never saw anything like it in Ghana, not even close.”
Kwaku currently pays £500 monthly rent in Coventry and says he is focused on working, not relationships. “I wasn’t married before coming, and I’m not looking for a relationship here.”
Although he left his profession behind in Ghana, Kwaku admits that even with a normal job in the UK, he earns far more than he ever did back home. His message is clear: abroad is not easy, but it can change your finances if you understand the reality and prepare your mind.
