Akua Serwaa, a Ghanaian based in the United Kingdom, has shared her painful marriage and divorce experience on “Matter Dey” with DJ Nyaami.
According to Akua Serwaa, she moved to the UK at a young age, where she completed her education up to university level. After college, she met a man, fell in love, and became pregnant. Although she wanted to marry him, her family was not fully in support of the union.
Despite their concerns, the couple went ahead to marry after the birth of their first child.
She explained that both families supported them initially. They agreed on a financial arrangement where she would work during the day and handle household expenses, while her husband worked night shifts and saved his income to buy a house.
After about five years, he managed to secure a mortgage. However, he later told her that her credit score was not good enough, so the property had to be registered in his cousin’s name, with the promise that things would be corrected later. Trusting him and having no one to advise her, she agreed.
Akua Serwaa said challenges started when their children reached school-going age. Her husband promised to handle school applications but failed to do so, resulting in one child missing placement. The child was later sent to Ghana, and when Akua visited, she noticed her husband had become distant and withdrawn. She later brought all the children back to the UK so they could grow up together.
She further alleged that her husband became controlling and selfish, refusing to allow her to work and leaving the full responsibility of the children on her. The couple had only performed a traditional marriage, not a court marriage. In 2022, after nine years of marriage, she was shocked to discover that her husband had reported to authorities that he had divorced her and was solely responsible for the children—effectively removing her from the picture.
She later found out that he had also purchased land in Ghana in his name only, without including her, despite their joint sacrifices.
Things escalated when a serious argument turned violent. Akua Serwaa alleged that her husband physically assaulted her, forcing her to involve the police. The case was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), where she became a witness. Although she initially did not want to press charges because he was the father of her children, the situation worsened. She was further devastated when their church pastor appeared in court to support her husband against her.
Afterwards, her husband demanded that she move out of the house, claiming the property belonged to him and his cousin. Akua Serwaa said this was unfair because she had contributed financially to the household for years to enable the purchase of the house.
She revealed that her father had warned her against the marriage, believing the man married her for “nkrataa” (documents) and not genuine love—a concern she now believes has proven true. She also disclosed that she cut ties with her family for 19 years to make the marriage work.
The couple officially divorced in 2023. Akua Serwaa currently lives in the house with the children, while her ex-husband no longer resides there. Due to fear after the assault, she obtained a restraining order against him.
She said her ex-husband later served her an eviction letter, describing her as a tenant. However, she was able to provide bank statements and proof of financial contributions, which helped delay the eviction in court.
Although she allows him access to the children, Akua Serwaa disclosed that he has gone back to court seeking full custody, even though she bears the full financial responsibility for them.
She is now calling for a fair settlement, insisting that the house should be sold and the proceeds shared equitably.
“We all suffered to build this home. I only want fairness,” she said.
She described her ex-husband as greedy and unfair, adding that all she seeks is a peaceful resolution that protects her and her children.
