Saeed Amin, a Ghanaian now based in Naples, Italy, recently shared his incredible journey on Svtv Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with DJ Nyaami. Amin recounted the challenges he faced traveling from Ghana to Europe and how determination and hard work shaped his life.
“I left Ghana in 2010,” Amin explained. “I first went to Libya, crossing the desert and the sea before arriving in Italy in 2011. Back in Ghana, I was from Ye Kwamie but stayed in Kumasi for school, where I learned auto body repair, especially for big trucks. Growing up, I loved working on small cars too, and I always had a passion for mechanics.”
Amin described how his journey was not easy. After arriving in Italy, he was stranded due to the political unrest in Libya and had to live in refugee camps. “Because of the war in Libya, we were considered full refugees. I moved to France for a while but returned to Italy, where I faced challenges with the immigration office and had to pretend to be sick just to get proper care,” he said. He also explained the struggles of not receiving the same support as others in the camps and relying on church shelters for food and accommodation.
Despite these hardships, Amin persevered. He found work, moved out of the camp, and eventually secured legal residency. Along the way, he met his wife, brought her to Italy, and together they have three children. “It was a family marriage. Life wasn’t easy, but we made it work,” he said.
To support his family, Amin pursued driving professionally. “I didn’t have a degree, so I learned welding and then decided to get a driving license. I failed the exams three times, but every failure gave me the motivation to try again. After training, I finally became a truck driver a year ago. I learned the language and mastered reversing and driving large trucks,” he explained.
Today, Amin earns €3,200 a month, with additional government support for housing and his three children, totaling around €800. He reflects on his journey with pride and gratitude.
“Life in Italy is much better now. Rent is affordable, and with the government support, we are able to live comfortably. I never gave up, and that perseverance paid off.”
Saeed Amin’s story is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of never giving up—even in the face of immense challenges.
