Michael, a Ghanaian currently stranded in Singapore, shared his ordeal on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with DJ Nyaami. He revealed how he fell victim to what appears to be a fraudulent job placement scheme.
According to Michael, a supposed agent facilitated his travel from Ghana to Singapore, initially promising that payment would only be made after securing employment.
“The agent started the process and didn’t charge us upfront. He told us to pay after everything was settled. We traveled from Ghana to Ethiopia and finally to Singapore. He paid for my ticket, and I reimbursed him. He even sent me contracts and documents,” Michael explained.
However, upon arriving in Singapore, the agent stopped answering his calls.
“I arrived last week, and he has not responded since then. I don’t know what to do. I have spent over 30,000 GHC on hotel accommodation and flight tickets, and he took 7,000 GHC for himself,” he added.
Currently, Michael is staying in a hotel on a tourist visa that will expire in 15 days. He is urgently seeking assistance from fellow Ghanaians in Singapore to help him relocate, as hotel costs are becoming unsustainable.“My visa is still valid, but I fear I may run into trouble if I overstay. I feel trapped because this was supposed to be a legitimate work permit, but it turned out to be fake,” he said.
Michael’s story highlights the dangers of fraudulent overseas job schemes, which often target young people seeking better opportunities abroad. Authorities in both Ghana and Singapore have been urged to investigate cases like these to protect vulnerable migrants.
