George, a Ghanaian who has spent 20 years living and working in Japan, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide Show with Dj Nyaami to share his life story.
Originally from Ghana, George worked in busy markets like Kantamanto and Makola before moving to Japan, thanks to the support of his sister and her husband who were already living there. “I had to hustle from the moment I arrived because life in Japan is not easy for someone who knows no one. But I survived by God’s grace,” he said.
George’s early years in Japan were challenging, both socially and personally. He recalled a controversial situation involving a Japanese woman he became close to, which led to rumors that he had “snatched her” from another man. Despite these accusations and people claiming he used supernatural powers at work, he persevered and focused on his livelihood.
He faced additional hardships when bringing his family to Japan. His two older sons initially struggled with the transition, and his wife had to navigate complex immigration processes. “My first son became very ill, and the police advised us to let him return to Ghana temporarily. When he came back, it was even harder. My wife and I had to continue working to make ends meet,” George said.
Over the years, George and his family managed to establish themselves. He worked multiple jobs, acquired skills, and built a life despite challenges, including health issues caused by stress. He has children both in Japan and Ghana, some of whom faced health difficulties, including a three-year-old child who cannot walk due to complications.
George emphasized lessons for Ghanaians traveling abroad: “When you go abroad, be careful who you trust and keep your personal plans private. People can interfere or try to exploit you if they know too much.”
Despite the struggles, George remains resilient and thankful. He reflects on his two decades in Japan with a mixture of pride and caution, emphasizing the need for perseverance, careful planning, and family support.
