I Divorced Him and Chose Myself — Moving to Germany Saved My Life, Nana Adwoa Reveals
Nana Adwoa, a Ghanaian based in Germany, has shared her powerful life journey in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show. Speaking from Boxinkudai, a town close to Hamburg, she opened up about migration, marriage, divorce, and why she believes every woman must learn to stand on her own.
Nana Adwoa revealed that she originally lived in Asoase before leaving Ghana at the tender age of 13 to Italy. While in Italy, she studied business and later got married. The marriage produced three children. According to her, her husband was initially a good man, but his excessive dependence on his mother eventually destroyed their union. She explained that her mother-in-law controlled the marriage, and her husband always followed his mother’s advice, a situation that ultimately led to their divorce.
She disclosed that she was her husband’s first girlfriend and that they later married. However, she noticed changes after the marriage. While her husband had few friends before they married, he suddenly became very social afterward, while she maintained her long-standing friendships. Nana Adwoa also revealed that she did not know her husband was an alcoholic when they first met. What started as occasional drinking later turned into full-blown alcoholism, accompanied by domestic violence.
At one point, she said, her husband would call her mother, insult her badly, and later beg for forgiveness, even though he had deeply disrespected her family. They met in Italy and stayed married for about a year and a half. When she suggested sending the children to Ghana for care, her husband refused, and that was when she realized the marriage was heading toward an inevitable collapse.
According to Nana Adwoa, one day while her husband went to work, she packed up all his alcoholic drinks and sent them back to his family. Shortly after, the marriage officially ended in divorce. She revealed that her father never supported the marriage from the beginning and later admitted that divorcing her husband was the right decision. “That decision saved me,” she said, adding that it gave her the strength to depend on herself and move forward in life.
In 2016, Nana Adwoa relocated to Germany. She initially stayed with her uncle before moving into her own apartment. Today, she pays €970 in monthly rent and prides herself on being fully independent. She emphasized that she does not depend on government support, explaining that reliance on social benefits comes with strict rules and scrutiny. Because she works and supports herself, authorities cannot demand access to her bank statements.
Her ex-husband has since remarried and now has three children. Nana Adwoa, on the other hand, has not remarried, though she later dated and gave birth to another child. Her three older children still live in Italy and visit her in Germany during holidays. She admitted that she and her ex-husband are not on good terms.
Talking about life in Germany, Nana Adwoa described it as good, with real opportunities to make money, but warned that without discipline and good guidance, it is easy to fall behind. She also noted that social benefits for children are minimal compared to the actual cost of raising them.
In closing, Nana Adwoa advised women to always depend on themselves and not rely entirely on men. “Self-independence gives you freedom and strength,” she stressed. She added that she last visited Ghana three years ago and still holds her roots close to heart.
