Ohemaa Afriyie Shares Her Journey of Relocating from Ghana to the United States and Restarting Life Abroad

Ohemaa Afriyie is a Ghanaian currently based in New York, United States, where she has lived for the past three years. She shared her migration journey and life experiences during an appearance on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show hosted by DJ Nyaami.

Before relocating, Ohemaa was working in the corporate sector in Ghana, a position that gave her the opportunity to travel widely. Through her job, she visited several countries across Europe, China, and the United States, often travelling for short vacations. During one of her visits to the U.S., she stayed for two weeks and observed that living abroad was very different from visiting as a tourist. This experience influenced her decision to eventually relocate and restart her life abroad.

Ohemaa visited the United States twice before finally settling permanently. Her decision was also influenced by her assessment of future opportunities, particularly for children. She believed that access to opportunities abroad is less dependent on social connections compared to Ghana, where networks and influence often play a major role in success.

Since relocating, she has continued her education in the United States and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Human Resources and Health. She is also working alongside her studies and expects to graduate by the summer of 2026. According to her, combining education with work abroad allows individuals to gain experience while building long-term stability.

Although she acknowledges that some people regret travelling abroad, Ohemaa maintains that migration outcomes differ depending on preparation, mindset, and personal goals. With her background in the corporate sector in Ghana, she believes she has a clear understanding of the differences between working environments in Ghana and abroad.

Ohemaa noted that she did not resign from her job immediately when she first travelled to the United States, as she had not initially decided to settle permanently. Her cautious approach allowed her time to evaluate her options before making a final decision.

In terms of investments, she has made efforts both in Ghana and abroad. She owns land in Ghana, which she initially intended for rental development, and she has also invested in building apartments that are currently being rented out. She believes that if she had not travelled, she would have completed more construction projects earlier, but she remains confident in the long-term value of her investments.

Currently single, Ohemaa describes herself as focused on her personal growth and future plans. While open to relationships, she prefers a partner within her immediate environment rather than long-distance relationships across different states or countries.

Her story presents a balanced perspective on migration, highlighting that while travelling abroad is not a guaranteed path to wealth, it can provide opportunities for growth, education, and reinvention when approached with clarity and purpose.
