Ghanaian in the Netherlands Appeals for Help After Years of Debt and Mistreatment
Ghanaian national Kwaku, currently based in the Netherlands, has shared his difficult journey abroad during an appearance on SVTV Africa’s Matters Dey with DJ Nyaami. According to him, his life overseas has been filled with stress, exploitation, and emotional turmoil.
Kwaku revealed that he was brought to the Netherlands by his aunt three years ago on a visitor’s visa. She claimed to have spent €10,000 to sponsor his travel and demanded that he pay back €22,000 in total. Feeling he had no other option, Kwaku agreed to work and repay the money.
After securing a job—something he says was only by the grace of God despite having no residence documents—Kwaku began paying off the debt. However, he says his aunt subjects him to constant insults, stress and maltreatment in her home. According to him, each time he is paid, he is allowed to take only a small portion of his salary for his personal needs, with the rest going to her.
Over the last three years, Kwaku has managed to pay €12,000 of the amount, leaving a balance he hopes to complete by the end of next year. Despite this, he says the emotional and mental strain has become unbearable.
He added that even if he moves out of her house, he remains committed to completing the payment—but he fears staying with her any longer because of the toxic environment.
Kwaku is appealing to Ghanaians or any well-meaning individuals in The Hague or Rotterdam to assist him with relocation or guidance so he can rebuild his life and regain peace of mind.
