I Return To Ghana – They Tried To Convince Me To Stay, Their Struggles Felt Like Modern Day Slávéry

Nana Agyemang, a Ghanaian based in Ghana, shared his travel experiences and thoughts about life abroad during an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show. He revealed that he has visited the United Kingdom twice—spending five days on his first visit and three weeks on his second—and hopes to one day explore Germany to experience life there.

Nana Agyemang explained that although he likes the UK, life abroad is not as easy as many people imagine. “I prefer to stay in Ghana because life overseas can be stressful. When I’m in the UK, I’m always around Croydon,” he said, adding that people abroad pay far more bills than those living in Ghana.

He recalled doing a two-hour office cleaning job during one of his visits and quickly realizing the challenges that come with living abroad. “That job alone made me decide to return to Ghana. Here, I don’t go hungry, and I have a roof over my head,” he shared. He emphasized that even when someone abroad sends £1 to Ghana, they deserve appreciation because earning money outside is not easy.

Travelling, he said, has helped him develop better financial habits and taught him the importance of planning for the future. However, he strongly advised against agents who charge huge sums for visas, especially for visitors’ visas. “If you travel abroad with a visit visa, you will suffer,” he cautioned. He added that although he can return to the UK anytime, he chooses Ghana because of the peace and stability he enjoys.

Nana Agyemang also offered advice to travellers: “When you go abroad, don’t limit yourself to only Ghanaian friends. Nigerians and other nationals can guide you in ways that help you progress.” He recounted meeting a Nigerian who advised him on how to position himself better to earn more in the UK.

He noted that some Ghanaians abroad may pass by without greeting, but that shouldn’t discourage anyone. According to him, there are many job opportunities in Ghana, and several people engage in charitable deeds. He believes that Ghanaian youth often receive great opportunities but fail to make good use of them, leading to wasted resources and missed chances.
