Ghanaian in the U.S. Shares His Journey, Marriage, and Lessons Learned Abroad
Collins Annan, a Ghanaian living in Atlanta, Georgia (USA), has been in the United States for several years. He first traveled to the U.S. in 2020, returned briefly to Ghana, and then went back to settle permanently.
Collins is a graduate of the University of Ghana (UG) and holds a Master’s degree in Finance from UPSA. He currently works from home in Atlanta.
Reflecting on his journey, Collins shared that before he ever traveled, he had a dream that he would one day make it to America.
“I believed God would make a way,” he said. “When the opportunity came, I took it — and everything worked out in His time.”
In 2021, Collins met his wife, a Black American woman, through Upward Christian Dating App.
“When I met her, she told me she had been on the app for a long time without success,” he recalled. “We dated for about six months and later got married.”
Although they faced cultural differences, their shared values helped them bond.
“I was honest with her from the start,” Collins said. “She saw my qualities and supported me even when I was struggling to find a job in America.”
He also shared that before meeting his wife, his Ghanaian girlfriend broke up with him soon after he moved abroad. “She didn’t even wait two months,” he said with a smile.
Today, Collins’s wife works at a university, and he has found a stable job in finance. The couple recently bought their own house and are expecting a child. “My wife later got pregnant, and at one point, I returned to Ghana just to vote — because I’m a political person,” he added.
Collins will be eligible for U.S. citizenship next year and says his experience has taught him a lot about cross-cultural relationships. “When you date a foreigner, you have to reform and adapt,” he advised. “For example, Americans cherish anniversaries, but most Ghanaians don’t pay much attention to that — so you have to learn and adjust.”
He also emphasized the importance of discipline and mindset when living abroad. “Some people say you can’t get rich from a salary, but I disagree,” he said. “There are people who make a million dollars a month from their work. It depends on how you plan and manage your finances.”
Although he’s established in the U.S., Collins and his wife plan to return to Ghana in the future to invest and undertake projects. “My wife loves Ghana and wants us to do something meaningful there,” he said.
