Ghanaian Migrant in Romania Shares His Struggles and Hopes of Reaching Spain
Henry, a Ghanaian currently based in Romania, recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s “Daily Hustle Worldwide” show with DJ Nyaami to share his story about seeking a better life in Europe.
According to Henry, he and a group of friends were assisted by an agent who charged €6,000 each to take them from Ghana to Romania. They believed Romania was part of mainland Europe and that it would be easier to travel to other European countries from there.
“When we arrived, some of the boys who had relatives in other European countries were smuggled across the borders,” Henry explained. “But those of us without any family connections tried to stay in Romania and apply for documents. I applied for asylum, but they told me to leave the country. Now, I want to move to Spain, but I need help.”
Henry said that the agent who brought them to Romania disappeared after the journey, leaving them stranded. “We were 15 boys in total,” he said. “Now, only three of us are still here. The rest managed to move to other parts of Europe.”
He explained that they were given six-month ‘Visa D’ permits, for which the agent charged €5,000 initially, and later demanded another €1,000. “We spent about three months in Ghana before leaving, so when we got here, our visas only had three months left,” Henry said.
Life in Romania has been extremely difficult for the remaining group. “There are no jobs here,” Henry lamented. “We had to call people back home in Ghana to send us money just to survive.”
Despite the hardships, Henry remains determined to reach Spain. “I don’t have legal papers to go to Spain, and even if I get there, I won’t have money for rent,” he said. “I’m praying that some Ghanaians in Spain will help me — maybe host me for a while and help me find a job so I can start life there.”
Henry said he has two plans: either to find a way to smuggle himself into Spain or to use someone else’s documents to pass through the airport. “I spent €6,000 to get here, and I have nothing left. I’m broke,” he admitted. “All I need now is some support to make it to Spain and start over.”
