I Slept in Prison for 8 Months in Lebanon” — Ghanaian Woman Stelling Shares Her Painful Journey Abroad
Stevilina, a Ghanaian woman based in Syria, returned for a follow-up interview on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami to share an emotional update about her life since her first appearance.
Following her initial interview, the Ghana Embassy reportedly reached out to her, but according to Stevilina, she received no real assistance.
“The embassy official told me I wasn’t a family member, so he couldn’t help. He said when we travel and make money, we send it to our relatives — not to him. He even reported my case to a Nigerian embassy officer who later stepped in to assist,” she said.
Stevilina revealed that she endured eight months in prison in Syria and also spent total of nine months in Lebanon under very harsh conditions before being granted exit papers to return home.
“The Red Cross and some NGOs helped us with food. Eventually, a Lebanese organization bought my ticket so I can finally go back to Ghana,” she explained with relief.
She added that she is currently part of a group of 10 to 12 stranded African workers, many of whom are still waiting for assistance to return home.
“The Nigerian man helping us has done an incredible job. He’s still working to bring back more Africans who are stuck here, but I haven’t seen any new Ghanaians arriving lately.”
Reflecting on her painful experience, Stevilina regrets leaving Ghana under false promises from recruitment agents.
“Back home, I was earning 750 cedis a month, and the agent told me I’d make $300 monthly abroad. But I would have been better off in Ghana — at least I had my freedom there. Here, you live in fear; your madam can rebuke or punish you anytime.”
Despite everything she has endured, Stevilina finally preparing to return home. DJ Nyaami expressed his hope to welcome her at the airport when she safely arrives in Ghana.
