Mandy, a Ghanaian woman based in Munich, Germany, has shared her remarkable story about how a broken heart and a random Facebook message changed her life forever. She recounted her journey during an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show.
Mandy has lived in Germany for eight years. Back in Ghana, she always dreamed of becoming a nurse. She grew up in Taifa, completed high school there, and helped her mother, who sold cosmetics and wigs.
“In 2014, I went through a heartbreak. I opened Facebook just to distract myself, and that’s where everything began,” she revealed.
According to her, a white man sent her a message saying he was visiting Ghana and Togo and wanted her to show him around. They started chatting, and soon he sent her money to buy a phone so they could communicate better.
“Facebook brought me abroad,” Mandy said with a smile. “When he finally came to Ghana, he was very happy, and when he was leaving, he cried. Five months later, he returned to Ghana, bought me a ticket, and took me to Germany.”
Before traveling, Mandy had applied to Atibie Nursing Training College in Ghana but was not accepted — something that broke her heart at the time.
“I was disappointed because I really wanted to be a nurse. I only had my senior high school certificate when I traveled, but that helped me start life in Europe,” she explained.
Upon arriving in Germany, she was warmly welcomed at the airport with flowers by her partner and his family. He encouraged her to go to school before seeking a job.
Living close to Munich Airport, Mandy studied German and, after completing her B1 course, applied for a job at Lufthansa Airport.
“I worked at the airport for two years. Later, I upgraded to B2, but during COVID-19, flights were limited, and we lost our jobs. That’s when I decided to follow my nursing dream again,” she shared.
Initially, Mandy wanted to do a one-year nursing program to start earning quickly, but a mentor encouraged her to take the full three-year course.
“I went to nursing school for free — the government paid for everything, and the school even gave us allowances,” she said.
After completing her training, Mandy now works as a professional nurse in Germany.
“Before nursing school, I was earning about €1,300 a month. Now, after taxes, I take home around €4,000,” she proudly revealed.
She added that many West Africans abroad tend to remain at one level instead of upgrading themselves, something she hopes will change.
Mandy also mentioned that she travels back to Ghana every year to visit her family and stay connected to her roots.
