Francis, a Ghanaian who was formerly based in Dubai, shared his emotional story on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle show with DJ Nyaami.
According to him, his work contract in Dubai was unexpectedly canceled, and he was given just 30 days to leave the country. “I filed a complaint,” Francis explained, “but they told me it was a government contract, so nothing could be done. Only the authorities could intervene — not private companies.”
Frustrated by the situation, Francis said he went to the office to demand his passport. “I was angry and shouted at them until they finally prepared my ticket and gave me back my passport,” he recalled. “That’s how I managed to return to Ghana.”
When he arrived back home, Francis said he realized how blessed Ghana truly is. “I told myself I would never travel to the UAE again. But if I ever travel, it will be to Canada, where I can use my skills meaningfully,” he added.
He also shared his concern for many Ghanaian workers in Dubai who are facing similar challenges. “Most of the boys have had their passports seized. They can’t even speak English, so they can’t defend themselves,” he said. “One of my friends wanted to return home with me, but he couldn’t.”
Before moving to Dubai, Francis had worked in Qatar and expected a similar experience — but things turned out differently. “Life was hard in Dubai,” he admitted. “My family had to send me money to help me return home.”
Francis revealed that people have been gossiping about him since he came back. “Some say I came back empty-handed or that I don’t look like someone who has traveled before,” he said. “But I thank God I came back alive.”
After his interview aired, a kind-hearted man named James reached out to support him. “James sent me some money and encouraged me,” Francis said with gratitude. “He was also struggling — he lost customers at his phone and laptop repair shop and even fell sick — but he still helped me. I’m truly thankful to him.”
Francis ended by reflecting on his experience: “Dubai felt like a prison. I almost died there. I thank God and good people like James for helping me get back on my feet.”
