Francis Shares His Struggles After Being Stranded in the Bahamas
Francis, a Ghanaian who recently traveled to the Bahamas in search of greener pastures, has found himself stranded after being misled by a travel agent. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show, he narrated the hardships he is currently facing.
“I arrived in the Bahamas just last week. The agent assured me that I would get a job immediately on arrival—either on a cruise ship, as a driver, or in a restaurant. He also told me someone would meet me to assist me when I got here. But since I came, no one has shown up,” Francis said.
Instead of receiving help, Francis explained that the supposed contact demanded money from him. “He made me send him $500 for accommodation. Before traveling, I gave the agent GHC 3,000 (about $300), but when I got here, I realized the hotel charges $50 per night. The man only booked three days for me and pocketed $150. Now, I’m left with very little money, and survival here is not easy.”
Francis revealed that he invested heavily in the trip. “In total, I’ve spent about GHC 110,000, including my ticket. I used my savings from working as an electrician and even took loans from people. Right now, I feel frustrated because this money could have sustained me for many years in Ghana.”
He added that without a work permit, finding a job in the Bahamas is almost impossible. “The agent defrauded me. He promised ‘job on arrival,’ but it was all lies. Just because the Bahamas is close to the U.S., I believed there would be more opportunities. But it hasn’t worked out like that.”
To make matters worse, his return ticket is booked for November, and going back to Ghana early could get him into serious trouble. “I borrowed GHC 50,000 from my boss to fund this trip. If I return now without any success, I’ll be in deep debt and shame. I need a job or at least affordable accommodation so I can survive until November.”
Francis concluded with advice for others: “I’ve learned a painful lesson. Before traveling, make sure any agent you use is verified and has the proper work permit documentation for you. Otherwise, you may end up stranded like me.”
