My Brother Died in Italy 15 Years Ago and Was Buried by Strangers” – Mary
Mary, a Ghanaian market woman, shared her heartbreaking story on SVTV Africa Connect as she searched for her long-lost brother in Italy.
According to her, the family had lost contact with her brother, Kwabena Odame, many years ago. Recently, she received the devastating news that he had actually died in Italy back in 2010 after suffering a stroke.
Mary recounted:
“We heard he was attacked by a stroke and couldn’t speak again. He was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, he passed away. Since he had no known relatives around, a Roman Catholic priest organized his burial. I only found out through someone who knew him, and I have been trying to get more details so I can at least request a mass for him. I haven’t even been able to tell the rest of my family yet. Since last night, I’ve been broken, but I leave everything to God.”
Eric’s Account
Eric, who works at an immigration office in Italy, also confirmed the story. He explained that Kwabena Odame had been a regular face at their office, often coming there to eat.
“We later heard that a Ghanaian man had suffered a stroke at the hospital. It turned out to be him. Because of the stroke, he couldn’t speak, which made it impossible to trace his family. He was transferred to a care center in southern Italy, where he lived for two to three years before passing away. Unfortunately, since he couldn’t communicate, we never found his relatives.”
Eric added that Odame died in 2010 and was buried without any family present.
He also offered a piece of advice to Ghanaians abroad:
“Men abroad should be careful. Many lose contact with their families because of relationships or financial struggles. I strongly believe Kwabena Odame may have had children here in Italy, but since his family couldn’t be traced, nothing was documented. If you have children abroad, let your family back home know—so they are not left searching in pain like this.”
