Raymond, a Ghanaian living in Japan, shared his experiences in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show.
According to him, Japan once introduced a free skilled job visa sponsorship program aimed at attracting foreign workers. When news of this spread, especially among Nigerians, the program became heavily abused. People from countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and others also rushed to apply. However, Ghana didn’t take advantage of it quickly enough.
Due to the overwhelming pressure and misuse, the Japanese government eventually canceled the program. Leaders from several African countries later begged Japan to reconsider, but the exchange program was instead modified into a stricter version.
Raymond explained that many Africans in Japan initially focused on businesses like buying used Toyota cars and shipping them home, which became profitable. But over time, the Japanese government noticed that Africans were abusing business opportunities, so they increased taxes and raised the business startup requirement to 30 million yen (hundreds of thousands of dollars).
He warned Africans to be careful with agents who claim to secure visas to Japan, saying: “Most of them brainwash Africans by painting the continent as hopeless just to take your money.”
On lifestyle in Japan, Raymond noted cultural differences:
-
Marriage & relationships: Japanese women generally don’t engage in intimacy before marriage, and divorce is taken very seriously.
-
Prostitution: It is illegal in Japan, but often hidden behind so-called “massage parlors.”
-
Dating Japanese women: He added that Japanese women are considered “the most expensive” in terms of relationships, compared to other places.
Raymond concluded by encouraging Ghanaians and Africans to do proper research before migrating and avoid being duped by agents promising easy visas.
