Ghanaian Woman in the UK Shares Painful Experience of Family Betrayal Abroad
Abena, a Ghanaian living in the UK, appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami, where she opened up about her struggles after relocating abroad.
According to Abena, her journey to the UK was facilitated by a family member who initially seemed supportive. However, shortly after she arrived, he shocked her by demanding £14,000 (about 3 billion old Ghana cedis) as payment for bringing her abroad.
She revealed that the relative only allowed her to stay in his house for a month before leaving her to fend for herself. During that short period, she endured maltreatment, intimidation, and constant pressure.
“Anytime I saw him, I panicked because of the way he shouted and dominated me. He even demanded my payslip when I started working,” Abena disclosed.
Fortunately, she managed to find another place to live, though the conditions were far from ideal in. She currently rents space in someone’s home but has no private bedroom.
“I sleep in the hall and wait for all the kids to go to bed before I can change my clothes. Sometimes the boys and girls are all there, and it makes me very uncomfortable. Yet, I still pay for both rent and food,” she explained.
Abena admitted that her documents are not yet ready, but her family member continues to pressure her for money. She added that if she had remained under his roof, she would never have had even £1 to herself.
Despite being married, with her husband still in Ghana, she struggles in silence and cannot openly share her challenges with him or her parents. “The only comfort I get is knowing my husband stands by me. I thank God for him, even though I can’t tell him everything I’m going through here,” she said.
Abena’s story serves as a caution to Ghanaians considering traveling abroad through relatives. She advised that not all family members have good intentions and urged others to prepare adequately before making such a move.
