Ghanaian Carpenter Stephen Thrives in Australia After Challenges in New Zealand
Stephen, a Ghanaian carpenter based in Australia, recently returned as a guest on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle Worldwide show with DJ Nyaami. Sharing his migration journey, Stephen revealed that he first moved to New Zealand but later relocated to Australia because the system in New Zealand “wasn’t favorable.”
“I came to Australia this year. I applied for schools in New Zealand but didn’t get in. In Ghana, if you apply with the right requirements, they give you the visa easily. I’ve traveled to about six countries, but I feel Australia is the best. Here, they value your career, skilled workers are in high demand, and companies even help with residence permits and documents,” Stephen explained.
According to him, the cost of living in Australia is similar to New Zealand, with rent around $1,000 depending on the area. However, the opportunities for skilled workers are better in Australia. “The company I work for does maintenance. Even people with New Zealand passports applied but didn’t meet the requirements. Here, you can’t use someone else’s documents to work. Companies hire you based on merit. I even rejected an offer before another company hired me—they bought me a car and gave me a fuel card because the workplace is far. They also make sure you’re paid well,” he added.
Stephen contrasted the system abroad with Ghana, pointing out that many skilled workers in Ghana are unable to make good money due to structural limitations. “In Ghana, the system doesn’t meet international standards. Skilled workers don’t earn much, so many end up doing small ‘table-top jobs.’ Meanwhile, out here, the minimum wage is $40 per hour, and foreigners even get government support,” he emphasized.
