Frank Osei, a proud graduate of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has secured a fully funded PhD scholarship worth $60,000 annually in the United States. The package covers tuition, living allowance, gym membership, and other benefits for five years — totaling about $300,000.

His academic journey was far from easy. Frank first attempted to study in Norway but faced challenges that cut short his plans. Determined not to give up, he continued working towards his dream of studying abroad, and after years of effort, he finally made it to the US to pursue his passion for research.

He credits part of his success to the valuable guidance of SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami and Ghanaian scholar Dr. Cyril, whose advice helped him refine his application strategy and secure admission to the University of Nebraska. This move marks his first time traveling outside Ghana, and he described his arrival in the US as smooth, with immigration officers showing genuine warmth and courtesy.

Before leaving Ghana, Frank worked at Negushi Medical Center, where he built a strong foundation in immunology and laboratory work. His new program will allow him to contribute to cutting-edge research that could directly benefit Africa’s healthcare sector. He also emphasized that contrary to some fears, his experience so far has been welcoming, with African students receiving warm treatment from the university community.

Frank’s scholarship, valued at over $300,000, will support his research in immunology, with the goal of improving healthcare outcomes in Africa. As an Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) turned researcher, his transition from healthcare in Ghana to a PhD program in the US highlights the possibilities for Ghanaian professionals to advance their careers globally. He hopes his work will help tackle pressing health challenges and inspire more Ghanaian students to aim for international research opportunities.
