Kobby, a Ghanaian currently based in Texas, USA, has lived in the United States for 13 years. He began his educational journey studying accounting at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and later pursued a master’s degree at the University of Texas. Before relocating to the U.S., he worked briefly at Ghana Commercial Bank and was already married with children.
Initially, he had plans to become a chartered accountant. However, upon moving to the U.S., his career path took a different turn. After exploring the job market and conducting extensive research, he realized the future lay in technology—specifically, IT and cybersecurity. This prompted him to pursue a master’s in Information Technology.
Driven by self-discipline and curiosity, Kobby began learning basic IT skills through YouTube and other online resources. Today, he works remotely in a flexible role that allows him to manage his work schedule around family responsibilities, including picking up his kids from school.
Kobby specializes in data protection, cybersecurity, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) within cybersecurity. His role is in high demand, and he notes that depending on the company, one can easily earn a six-figure salary in this field.
“Every company needs cybersecurity professionals,” he emphasizes. “With AI evolving rapidly—powering self-driving cars and automating processes—many traditional jobs are becoming obsolete. Even big companies like Microsoft have laid off thousands. This is a wake-up call for everyone to reskill.”
He highlights that sectors like banking and marketing are already undergoing major transformations. Bank tellers are being replaced by ATMs and mobile banking, while traditional marketing is giving way to digital strategies.
Kobby encourages others to keep learning and adapting.
“Even in IT, I keep upgrading my skills so that I remain relevant. I have kids—I can’t afford to be left behind if my job is replaced.”
Beyond his professional life, Kobby is also investing in Ghana. He was recently in Ghana and has ongoing projects there. He plans to return in November and is passionate about helping young people get into cybersecurity.
“My goal is to support the youth in Ghana to embrace the digital future. Change is constant—those who adapt will thrive.”
