Popular TikTok personality Papa Derrick has spoken out about the dangers of gambling, particularly how it affects Ghanaians and young people today. In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa, he explained that many people get involved in gambling out of ignorance and curiosity—not realizing how the system is designed to manipulate and trap them.
“People just want to try it out to see if what they’ve heard is true. The companies behind these betting platforms know this, so they make the first few games easy to win. That gives a false sense of confidence,” he said.
According to Papa Derrick, once someone wins early on, they begin to believe they can make real money. But the system is programmed to take back what it gives.
“If you start with GHC 5,000 and win GHC 20,000, the system will try to take GHC 15,000 back from you. In the end, you may lose everything,” he warned.
He added that gambling thrives on greed, with people hoping for sudden financial freedom. He shared the story of a man who owed GHC 5,000. When he received GHC 1,000, instead of paying part of his debt, he went to gamble it—thinking he’d win and settle his loan. Sadly, he ended up losing over GHC 20,000.
Another man sold his television for GHC 3,000, money he intended to use for betting. If Papa Derrick hadn’t intervened, he would have lost it all. In another case, a man who once had ten cars and several houses lost everything to gambling. He confessed to his wife, who then informed his mother. Together, they tried to help him recover, but he had already lost over GHC 2 million. The man even prayed to God, saying if he ever gambled again, he should be punished.
Papa Derrick also recalled a man who fell for a scam claiming to sell an “Aviator hack” (a popular betting game). He paid GHC 3,000 to the scammer, hoping to win back his losses, and even sold a house to continue gambling. In one day alone, he lost GHC 200,000 and ended up begging his own employees for money.
“This man has been gambling for 40 years and has lost over a million dollars,” Derrick revealed.
He also shared the story of a fashion designer who was introduced to betting by a friend while her husband was abroad. She started with GHC 50 and won GHC 350, which made her more confident. She later sold her GHC 100,000 container for just GHC 30,000 to continue betting with this man. She even lied to her husband, pretending she was resting, and stayed overnight with the man to gamble.
In just 3 minutes, GHC 15,000 vanished, and eventually, the entire GHC 30,000 was gone. She had no money for antenatal care and couldn’t even afford GHC 50 for food. Papa Derrick advised her to confess to her husband. Fortunately, she listened, and though she’s now in debt, she has finally quit gambling.
A banker with 40 years of experience lost over $1 million in just three months after getting involved with Aviator gambling. Despite a long and stable career in banking, the lure of quick money led him down a dangerous path. The rapid losses wiped out his savings and assets, including multiple cars and houses, causing severe financial and personal turmoil. This story highlights how even the most disciplined professionals can fall victim to gambling addiction, especially with highly addictive platforms like Aviator. It’s a cautionary tale about the risks of chasing easy money and the devastating impact gambling can have regardless of one’s background.
Papa Derrick concluded that greed, lack of understanding, and the false hope of instant riches are what draw people into the trap of gambling. He urged the youth to stay focused, work hard, and avoid shortcuts that promise fast money but end in disaster.
