Popular social media influencer Obeng Darko recently appeared on SVTV Africa’s Daily Hustle GH with DJ Nyaami to share powerful insights about wealth-building in Ghana. According to him, it’s entirely possible to stay in Ghana and build more properties and assets than some people who travel abroad.
“Many people who go abroad come back with nothing, while wholesalers and retailers who travel back and forth to bring goods to Ghana often build houses and acquire properties,” he said. “Anyone serious in Ghana can also do well.”
Obeng emphasized that success depends on focus and discipline, not just relocating overseas. Whether you’re into farming, trading, or drilling boreholes, consistent effort and commitment can bring lasting wealth.
“Some people abroad have lived there for 15 years but have nothing apart from their salary. Meanwhile, someone in Ghana, focused and disciplined, can acquire more assets,” he explained. “Freedom is hard to find abroad — most Ghanaians there are not truly free.”
He added that lack of information is one of the biggest barriers holding people back. “It’s not always poverty that limits people; it’s ignorance. Wealth is hidden in knowledge.”
Obeng shared a cautionary story about someone who returned from America with over $100,000 but lost it all because he lacked the right knowledge and investment mindset.
“Doing business, farming, drilling boreholes – these bring in constant income. Someone may brag about their son being a doctor or living in New York for 15 years, but if there’s no investment beyond a salary, it’s not sustainable wealth.”
He warned against using money for show rather than investing in income-generating ventures. “You see people buying big cars without planning for the future. At 60, they’re forced to sell those same cars just to afford medicine.”
Obeng pointed out that some celebrities — footballers, actors, and musicians — who once had fame and fortune now rely on donations in old age because they failed to plan wisely.
“Even when you’re building a house, make sure you have a cashflow system. I know someone who built houses from cocoa farm income, even while hospitalized.”
He explained that relying solely on a salary is risky. “Most of the truly poor people are those who depend only on monthly wages. When illness strikes, they have no backup.”
He questioned the logic behind building huge homes with no income return. “Why build a 10-bedroom house if it brings in no money? It becomes a burden.”
Obeng encouraged young people, whether employed or not, to invest in land and farming. “Start with 10 acres. You don’t need a huge capital. Even drilling a borehole and charging people to use it can generate income.”
“I want financial freedom,” he concluded. “And if I can achieve that here in Ghana, I won’t waste time chasing a life abroad. Use whatever gift God gave you — He expects you to develop and multiply it.”
Key Lessons from Obeng Darko:
- Stay focused and informed — knowledge is wealth.
- Invest in income-generating ventures like farming, trading, and borehole services.
- Don’t rely solely on a salary — build assets that bring daily income.
- Don’t chase status or luxury at the expense of future security.
- Use your talent and invest wisely — that’s the real path to freedom.
