Edith, an Ewe woman based in Dome, Accra, Ghana, is the founder of Edit Food Bites, an online catering and hospitality business. She was recently featured on SVTV Africa’s Business Link show with DJ Nyaami, where she shared her inspiring entrepreneurial journey.
Edith has been in the hospitality and catering industry for five years. Though she doesn’t operate from a physical shop, she runs her business entirely online. Customers place their orders through social media platforms, and she delivers directly to them. She specializes in both local and continental dishes, as well as pre-ordered meals for events such as birthdays, funerals, and weddings.
She started cooking at home and later pursued formal training at Accra Technical University to polish her culinary skills. She initially moved to Accra for work and later returned to school, working at a restaurant that eventually shut down. This pushed her to start a small home-based restaurant.
Edith initially funded her cooking business with her school fees. While working with a logistics company called Glovo—which is no longer active in Ghana—she would receive up to 30 orders a day. She prepared food and drinks, including pizzas, from home. In 2019, she launched her pre-order service with an investment of GHC 600.
Clients are required to make at least half of the payment upfront and pay the rest upon delivery. For large orders, she has a team she collaborates with. Her registered business, Edit Food Bites, also offers local beverages like sobolo, pineapple-ginger juice, mixed fruit juice, and even ice cream. She also sets up local bars for events.
One of her unique offerings is packaging rice bowls with vegetables, which can be stored in the fridge for convenience. Edith admits that the cooking business is stressful, especially when balancing it with her personal life.
Her journey wasn’t without challenges. She originally wanted to pursue nursing, but after her father’s passing, she shifted to vocational education with encouragement from her mother. This led her to choose cooking as a career.
Edith’s favorite food is plantain, and she advises that reinvesting the same capital while running a business can be difficult. Nonetheless, she remains passionate and committed to growing her brand.
