Dr. Sarfo Kantanka, based in the Western Region of Ghana, has built a career and a life rooted in his passion for plant medicine. For over a decade, he has been working in the Bogoso and Wasa regions, where he not only practices as a herbalist but also provides nutritional supplements to enhance health. His journey into the world of health consulting and herbal medicine began after he became a health consultant and worked at Providence Health Services, which has eight branches across Ghana.
At Providence Health Services, Dr. Kantanka grew both professionally and personally. He became a key member of the team, providing health screenings and diagnoses. Over time, his role evolved, and he was responsible for training other consultants. However, despite his growing responsibilities, his salary remained the same, and this stagnation fueled his decision to pursue a different path.
Dr. Kantanka’s turning point came when he started listening to motivational speakers like Obeng Darko, who emphasized that true success isn’t just about salary—it’s about pursuing your calling and making a lasting impact. Inspired by this mindset shift, Dr. Kantanka decided to leave his job and focus on his passion for natural healing. He began going house-to-house, offering free health consultations and educating people about the benefits of traditional medicine and a return to nature.
His efforts started gaining traction, and soon he was invited to speak on radio stations and at churches, where he preached the importance of holistic health. He emphasized that nature’s healing powers, like the medicinal plants used by our grandmothers, can strengthen our immune systems and help protect us from diseases like COVID-19. As his practice grew, Dr. Kantanka opened his own office in Bogoso and started reaching out through radio and community programs.
Dr. Kantanka’s success didn’t stop at herbal medicine. He partnered with local farmers to focus on sustainable agriculture, including maize, cassava, and ginger farming. He also collaborated with other businesses to grow his income. With the financial stability that his ventures provided, Dr. Kantanka’s life and marriage improved dramatically, as he was able to focus on building a secure future for his family.
“I used to earn less than 2,000 GHS, but now I make 10,000-15,000 GHS a week. I’ve found that the real wealth is right here in Ghana,” he shares. His perspective on Africa’s potential is rooted in his belief that many wealthy individuals within the continent don’t need to leave. Instead, they should invest in their own land, businesses, and communities.
Dr. Kantanka’s entrepreneurial journey has been a source of inspiration to many. He now produces ginger-based products like ginger bread, and other healthy snacks, using honey as a base. His business has experienced high demand, and his partner helps him manage production in Bogoso. Dr. Kantanka’s goal is to share his knowledge of farming, medicine, and nutrition with the youth of Ghana, encouraging them to work hard and pursue their dreams locally rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
