Mr. Obeng: From a 1,400 GHC Investment to a Thriving Fried Rice Business

Mr. Obeng, a well-known fried rice chef based at Tema Community 1, opposite Site 2 Maame Sekune, shared his inspiring journey on Business Link with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa. He explained that he started his food business with just 1,400 GHC in 1996 — an amount he believes would not be sufficient to start the same venture today.

Beginning his career during his youthful days, Mr. Obeng has seen significant growth, transforming from a young boy learning the ropes to a seasoned entrepreneur. Over the years, his dedication and hard work have allowed him to travel abroad and achieve notable success in the food industry.

Through his business, Mr. Obeng has built a house, purchased a car, and supports his family. He now operates not only his main spot in Tema but also runs a branch in Kpone. Initially working under someone else, he eventually decided to branch out on his own in 2012, eager to deepen his knowledge and master his craft. He encourages young people to learn skills rather than chase quick money, stressing that patience and learning are crucial for long-term success.

Despite the many rewards, Mr. Obeng admitted that managing workers has been his biggest challenge. Some employees have stolen from him, while others quit unexpectedly. Nonetheless, he remains committed to his business, believing that his excellent food quality and service keep customers coming back.

Specializing solely in fried rice, Mr. Obeng prides himself on his unique flavors, particularly his pepper and sauces, which he describes as his little secrets. He offers home services, with customers either picking up the food themselves or arranging their own deliveries.

Mr. Obeng’s business operates mainly at night. He starts early in the evening and closes around 1 AM, often reaching home by 4 AM. He ensures he stocks up for the week and employs several workers, with his wife playing a crucial role in managing the Kpone branch.

He emphasized that the key to success in the food business is cooking delicious meals with quality ingredients. His offerings include chicken sauce, beef sauce, salad, and grilled dishes, ensuring customers have tasty options every night.

Mr. Obeng’s story is a powerful testament to what hard work, resilience, and passion can achieve, even when starting with limited resources.
