Richard Brefo: From Teaching to Farming and Car Importation

Richard Brefo, a Ghanaian entrepreneur, is involved in both farming and car importation. He grows cassava and plantain, utilizing his free time from car importation to engage in agriculture.

Originally a teacher, Richard transitioned into car importation in 2019. He imports vehicles from Japan, supplying them to customers in Ghana. Though he has never been to Japan, he has built a reliable network, ensuring the smooth importation and sale of cars. When customers receive their vehicles, they pay in installments, allowing him to reinvest in the business.

During a 2024 seminar by Mr. Obeng Darko, Richard realized he could expand his ventures. He adopted the mindset of using existing resources as capital, leading him to sell his personal car to fund the importation of two smaller vehicles, which he then resold. This marked a turning point in his business journey.

Richard has faced financial hurdles, but through trust and credibility, he has been able to grow. In 2022, he bought a car for someone, making an initial 50% payment while securing the rest later. The car’s owner, based in the U.S., passed away, but thanks to the trust Richard built with the Japanese company, he was able to settle the debt on time.

Richard’s journey has not been linear. He initially pursued a teaching assistantship in the U.S. before returning to Ghana to teach in Obuasi. Over time, he realized that entrepreneurship provided better financial prospects. He briefly ventured into cigar production, supplying schools, but later returned to teaching for four years. Eventually, he left teaching again to focus fully on business.

He also leased two acres of land, expanding his farming operations while maintaining his car import business. He dreams of cultivating cash crops like cocoa in the future.

Richard currently imports Toyota Vitz, Toyota Verossa, Toyota Vogue, and other family cars, delivering them to Kumasi and Techiman. However, due to financial constraints, he sometimes struggles to meet the growing demand. If he had more capital, he believes he could scale the business significantly.

Richard believes anyone can start small, emphasizing that poverty is not enjoyable and that hard work leads to success. He encourages young entrepreneurs to use what they have to create opportunities rather than waiting for external support.

Through resilience and strategic decision-making, Richard Brefo has built a multi-faceted business, proving that with determination, anyone can rise above challenges and create a sustainable livelihood.
