Ghanaian Financial Advisor Patrick on Treasury Bills, Gold Investment, and Business Opportunities

Ghanaian financial advisor Patrick has provided insights into the country’s current investment climate, particularly regarding treasury bills, gold investments, and viable business opportunities.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa’s Business Link, Patrick noted that at the beginning of the year, treasury bill rates had dropped significantly. The rate for 3-month and 1-year treasury bills fell from 26-28% to around 14-15%. If an investor had previously purchased treasury bills, they would now see a lower return due to this decline. However, he explained that the government is expected to invest in productive sectors of the economy, which could influence interest rates.

Patrick mentioned that the government’s budget has not yet been approved. Once finalized, spending will increase, potentially driving treasury bill rates higher. While he is uncertain if rates will return to 28-30% this year, he predicts they will rise by May.

For those looking for alternative investment options beyond treasury bills, Patrick highlighted the Ghana Gold Coin. He explained that investing in gold can be a good option since its value appreciates over time. Currently, a gold coin is priced at GHC 2,900, and within six months, it could increase by GHC 1,000, yielding a profit. Those interested can purchase gold directly from banks authorized by the Bank of Ghana. Investors can either store their gold with the banks for safekeeping or keep it themselves.

He also referenced historical price trends, noting that on March 25, 2025, a one-ounce gold coin was valued at GHC 48,000, an increase of over GHC 8,000. This demonstrates that gold investment can be a lucrative option similar to treasury bills.

Patrick encouraged individuals to consider investing in shares, using MTN shares as an example. He pointed out that MTN’s stock price has increased from GHC 2.0 to GHC 3.17 over the past year, providing a potential 90% return for early investors. However, he cautioned that unlike treasury bills, stock investments carry risks, as share prices can fluctuate.

Additionally, Patrick identified small business opportunities that could be profitable in Ghana. He mentioned that during the Harmattan season, demand for sachet water increases as people consume more water due to the dry weather. Selling sachet water can be a good business venture. Other profitable business ideas include selling plastic cups, spoons, and bowls, which are commonly used for events. Wholesale and retail sales of these items can be highly lucrative.

Moreover, he advised entrepreneurs to conduct thorough research before starting any business. He emphasized the importance of proper capital planning and finding reliable business partners to avoid failure. Many businesses collapse within six months due to a lack of financial planning and poor management.

Patrick concluded by stressing the importance of financial security and responsible investment decisions. He recommended using banks for safekeeping rather than leaving large sums of money unprotected. He also urged individuals to follow financial literacy content on Patrick TV GH for more business and investment advice.
