Aminu, a Ghanaian nurse based in Canada stated that he lived in debt and depended on loans to survive despite his GHS4000 pay.
In a chat on SVTV Africa with DJ Nyaami, Aminu mentioned that he realised his future in Ghana was bleak and decided to travel abroad for greener pastures. According to Aminu, travelling abroad was necessary because he couldn’t achieve his dreams with his meagre salary.
“I worked in the health sector for 12 years as a health assistant but my pay was less than GHS4000. I deserved to be paid more than GHS10,000 monthly. Things got worse especially during and after the pandemic.
Comparing the dreams I had to the salary I was getting was impossible. I could not achieve those dreams. I was always in debt at the end of the month and depended on loans. So, I started a side business to keep me afloat.”
Aminu added that he was not interested in travelling abroad until after the pandemic. His side business started failing, which changed his mindset, about working abroad. He shared more about his time in Canada; integrating and finding a job as a foreigner.
