Ghanaian farmer, Abena Dagarti mentioned that she quit her job in the media to become a full-time farmer in Kintampo in the Bono East Region.

Abena mentioned that she developed a passion for agriculture during her time at the University of Development Studies (UDS) but did not think of making it a career until an opportunity came knocking.

In a chat on SVTV Africa, Abena Dagarti said besides her passion for agriculture, she also wanted to be self-employed and not be dependent on a salary. She began the yam farm with GHS3000.

“It was a struggle in the beginning because I had not relocated yet. Getting the right people to manage the farm was tough, so I had to rent a place in Kintampo and cater to the farm myself. I almost lost all my investment until I found a trusted person to work with.

I started the yam farm with GHS3000 and for the first yam harvest alone, I made GHS2500. It wasn’t easy in the beginning but I was ready to learn. I haven’t regretted my decision to be a farmer.”

Abena Dagarti farms on 25 acres of land growing yam, maize, mango and coconut. She hopes to own a mango and coconut plantation in a few years.
