“In Ghana, even if you follow the process, you’d still need to pay someone to do it for you. ‘Who-you-know’ is a big deal in Ghana but it’s not like that in Germany. I started an NGO in 2022 and to register it, I had to pay GHS2000 for the person to even listen to me.

The same thing happened when I was registering my business. He collected the registration fee and his bonus too. Such things make living in Ghana stressful,”

According to her, the economy pushed her out of the country despite the peace she enjoyed. Okonore eventually married in Ghana but “I could not live the kind of life I wanted. So, I had to return to Germany.”

“I used to buy chicken for GHS25 but within a week, I bought it GHS45. The next week I bought it for GHS69. It’s such a small thing but it is indicative of how the economy was.”
