Ghanaian footballer Charles Ankomah became jobless and, eventually, homeless soon after his club went bankrupt.
In an SVTV AFRICA interview on Daily Hustle Worldwide, Charles gave an account of how he was recruited from Ghana at age 12 by a Belgian Football Academy and the circumstances that led to his homelessness.
According to the former Lierse S.K midfielder, the football team went bankrupt after his three-year contract in 2017, and he could not secure another deal to extend his work permit in Belgium.
He said,” I stayed with friends for a while and finally got a job in 2021 to get my permit, but they said I had to return to Ghana first. I could take that risk because there was no guarantee I could return.”
“My family depends on me, so returning to Ghana was out of the question. I went to Germany, France and Romania after the team collapsed to get a team, but it didn’t work out,” he added.
Charles Ankomah has been detained three times. He stated that he would have faced deportation if he hadn’t played football in the country. He has been without a home for two years and only bathes once a week. With the help of a Ghanaian, Charles got his first meal in four days right before the interview.
